Schafer addresses farmers

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer told farmers he was optimistic about the future of the industry. He said USDA projects agriculture exports to be $101 billion, up $9 billion from last year. "There is plenty to celebrate," he told producers. Part of the difference is the 1 billion new middle class customers in developing countries that have made there presence felt.

Schafer also told the group that trade remains a high priority for President Bush. Trade agreements with Korea, Panama, Peru and Columbia could mean the opportunity for $3 billion in ag exports next year. The Doha Round also had great potential, he said. "We will press for agreement this year that is fair to all parties," he said. (Journal photo by Holly Martin.)
